Binary star systems, black holes and planets?
So I was wondering how binary systems where one member is a black hole works. I know there are some systems such as Cygnus X-1. How does the black hole affects the life expectancy of its star partner? Would it be possible for planets to support life in such a system exist? What kind of orbit would they keep to stay fairly close to the star to sustain life, while staying away from this black hole? I know black holes gravity wells are just like other objects massive gravity well, then at first I thought a black hole system with a work exactly the same way as any other binary star system, but would not mass black holes grow as he has collected more material from its partner, which causes its severity and to expand and more high, making any sort of permanent orbit impossible? I suspect many of these issues may be in the "nobody knows for sure and perhaps variety never will, "but an educated guess is better than nothing.
