A sleeping bag and backpack baggage allowance?

I know it varies with each airline, but my brother needs to take a bag Sleeping with his backpack. It can not fit inside the backpack of 55 liters, it can not join the straps on the side out of the backpack. Will he be able to take the backpack and sleeping bag in hand luggage with a coat? If he must leave the backpack attached to the outside the backpack as checked baggage will be lost will not it? It does not even know if the 55-liter bag is too big to take as carry-on was. If you like some proper advice would be greatly appreciated!

The size of cabin baggage and weight limits are specified on sites airlines, but they are all quite similar. I agree that the backpack of 55 liters alone, never mind with a sleeping bag attached to it will simply be too big to be taken in a plane as hand luggage. If he wants to check the backpack with a sleeping bag attached to it. First of all ensure that it is indeed strapped, then tape the whole beam with large amounts of gaffer or pallet wrap clingfilm. This is just a case unpacking the "flat" when it reaches its destination.
