What's the secret to getting a custom avatar to look right?

When I try to use a picture as my avatar, the height and width always looks inproportionate. I see some avatars on here that look perfect. How do people get them to look good?

secret is that I have a handsome, brilliant and generous contact named Frank (TNGuy38) who graciously resized my avatar for me.
