How to dress for an interview?

I need to buy clothes for a job interview, but I do not know exactly what to get. It is for a position in a research laboratory. I want to know what kind of suit to obtain, and also what dress shoes, socks, shirt and tie. Also, can you recommend a briefcase (the one in leather and has a strap) and a portfolio (that Can I keep my notebook and pen in)? I am looking for something affordable.
